We have been informed by the authorities who conduct civil wedding ceremonies in Greece that with immediate effect they now require you to have your UK documents (all the documents we have requested from you except your passports) legalised in the UK prior to arriving in Greece. This means that the documents you have must be certified authentic official documents. They will be checked against a national register and a seal (called an Apostille Seal) will be attached to them.
All the documents you have acquired for your wedding (in English) must be officially certified (legalised) by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (Apostille Seal), Legalisation Department.
The office is open from 09:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday. The nearest tube station is Charing Cross (Northern & Bakerloo lines). The office is closed on public holidays.
For help and information, please call 0207 008 1111. Calls will be taken live from 10am to 12:00 and then again from 2:00pm to 3:00pm.
At all other times there is a 24 hour recorded information service, which gives very clear instructions, on this number.
We understand that the charge for this service is currently £27 per document.
If you (or someone else) go to the Legalisation Office in person, you will get your documents back the same day. If you choose to send them by post the process will take around 4 weeks (except at busy times when it may take longer). Please call the above number to make sure you have the correct, current information (and information on the length of time the postal service will take).
