About Lindos
With its dazzling white houses, narrow cobbled streets, Crusader castle and acropolis dramatically overlooking the sea, Lindos is one of the most beautiful locations you could choose for a wedding. The view of the village of Lindos with its houses spilling like sugar cubes down the hillside to the azure waters of the sandy bay is one of the most photographed in all Greece.
The village of Lindos was first inhabited around 3000BC and was an influential naval power thanks to its twin harbours. The village’s meandering lanes are still dotted with imposing doorways which lead into the flower-filled courtyards of the unique Lindian houses. These were built by rich sea captains between the 15th and 18th centuries and the carved stonework around the doorways denotes the number of ships the captains owned. Many of these traditional houses still feature painstakingly hand laid pebble mosaic floors, both inside and out.
The older houses mix Byzantine and Arabic styles and to wander through Lindos is to take a trip back into bygone ages. The village has been beautifully preserved and is now a National Historic Landmark.
The acropolis of Lindos includes a 4th century Temple of Lindian Athena which was among the most sacred sites in the ancient world, visited by Alexander the Great and allegedly Helen of Troy.
St Paul’s Bay is another of the village’s treasures. This is where the apostle Paul landed in AD43, bringing Christianity to Rhodes. The cove is idyllic, with its turquoise waters and dramatic backdrop of the acropolis. It is one of the most picturesque and spectacular settings you could imagine for a wedding. The tiny white chapel, which my husband’s Grandmother commissioned, is perched below a cliff face in the shadow of the acropolis, overlooking the Aegean. This could be the background for your wedding photographs!
